The Most Efficient Dissertation Proposal Writing Guide

There are four main goals of writing a dissertation proposal across a number of disciplines. First, you need to introduce the topic; second, you need to present existing research studies, the gaps in the subject area, and the implications of the study; third, you need to provide your research methods; and fourth, you need to provide a hypothesis for the work you are about to undertake. The following is an efficient guide for writing a dissertation proposal by addressing each of these goals:

  1. Introducing the Dissertation Research Topic
  2. A dissertation proposal shouldn’t be more than a couple of pages long. You are intending to get approval to proceed with your study from your graduate advisor, and you start off by simply introducing the topic. Give a couple of statements citing your interest in the topic, saying how your previous work or readings have inspired to delve into it further, and how it aligns with the work you’ve done as a graduate student to date.

  3. Research Review, Gaps, and Implications
  4. The next goal of your dissertation should be to provide the background information you’ve found up to date concerning your topic. Mention some of the more important research studies or documents done in your area. Next, identify the gaps of those studies and documents and give an explanation of the implications your project will have on the discipline and future related research projects. You should always break new ground in your dissertation project. Don’t be modest with your word choice; be sure to state the importance of your work.

  5. Providing Methodologies for Research
  6. Following the background content you need to provide your plans for conducting research. There are two major types of research: qualitative and quantitative. The first is an approach largely used in social sciences or in the humanities, where you will largely conduct your work reviewing academic material that has already been published. The second is an approach is largely used in the sciences, where you conduct new studies in the lab. This section is necessary to validate your findings.

  7. Introducing a Clear and Direct Hypothesis
  8. Finally, the last goal of your dissertation proposal is to provide your initial hypothesis for your study. A lot of students struggle writing these last few sentences because they aren’t entirely sure what to expect with their work. This is perfectly normal and does not usually affect whether your proposal is accepted or not. The main purpose is to provide your advisor with some evidence that you have thought through the entire project critically and can make an academic estimation. If you’re wrong with your guess you won’t be penalized later on, as long as you provide a reason for the outcome.
